Match Report for 'Great Houghton Cricket Club-First XI' vs 'Weekley & Warkton -1st XI' (h), (2009-09-12 12:30:00), (League Game)
HOUGHTON WIN!
The penultimate weekend of the season saw the boys from Weekley and Warkton make the trip down the A43 to the Leys Lane Oval. W&W sat second from bottom in the table and were in desperate need of a win against the “division’s whipping boys Great Houghton”.

It was a beautiful September’s day and when Matt lost the toss you could see Jarvo secretly pumping the air as he thought of big runs. He caressed the first ball of the day through extra cover for 4 and it looked like he may well have been right. Unfortunately in the 4th over he was gunned down after a very spurious appeal to a ball that missed the bat by a good 6 inches. Not amused, Jarvo trudged back to the pavilion. Robbie nicked off wafting carelessly outside off stump before Josh made a useful 20.
Jono and Charlie then produced a partnership of exactly 100 runs to steady the ship and put Houghton in a position to make 225 plus. Jon made his 3rd fifty of the season and Charlie made a fluent 53 – It was a shame that neither batsman went on to the magical 3 figures. A slight stutter meant that we finished the innings on 209 for 9, Ben making 15 not out to guide us to the 4th batting point.

It had been clear from W&Ws bowling attack that they were a few players missing and we knew that if we could remove a couple of key batsmen we were in with a good shout of recording our first win of the season. Tea was ‘al fresco’ due to the wedding taking place in the village hall. It was also a debut for the Subway Tea… nuff said.

Henry and Greg opened up the bowling and looked pretty good. Greg was bowling particularly well and it wasn’t long before he yorked their opener for 1. The Palmer brothers then started to build a partnership and at drinks were 102 for 1. We hadn’t bowled poorly but 3 drop catches had cost us dear and with the quick outfield any loose deliveries were being punished.

Enter the spin kings Charlie and Matt who proceeded to dismantle the entire W&W batting order. Charlie took the key wicket of Jake Palmer to break the partnership and finished with 4-47. Matt finished with his second 5 wicket haul of the season (5-18) and GHCC bowled W&W out for 184 with 2.1 overs remaining.

It was great to finally win a game. We have had the opportunity during the season but faltered at the critical points. On Saturday we turned up for the final 20 overs of the game and that was the difference.

Well done Houghton!
